And what's this little badge, at the bottom of every page? It's an association with Free-Range Social Media, a forward-thinking movement started by a woman we like, Brené Brown (for those of us who aren't bilingual in Spanish: yes, her first name translates to "Brenda").
Brown has, for the past decade, been working in a field she calls "shame studies"—which has deep resonance with the several decades scholars like me and those who came before me put into trauma and recovery work. It might be tempting to dismiss what Brown is doing, on the basis of perpetuating yet another self-help movement replete with self-appointed guru—but to do that would be to miss entirely the woman's point. Forget how tired you are of the middle-aged men on TED: Brown's appearances there are actively engaging, amusing, and poignant. She may not be saying anything you don't already know, but it's deeply rewarding to hear anyone speak truth with grace, ease, and a sense of humor. And, for those of you who like what I regularly have to say, when you call or email to hear me rant, please go listen to Dr. Brown: she has videos, books, and a great deal more materials, to keep you on course.
An Anglo-European woman from Tejas, Brown is adopting the indigenous notion of tribal affiliations, and dismissing hierarchal definitions (though those don't exist, in tribal affiliations). We're about inclusion, and we agree with the importance of "free-range" products.
Though Brown never makes a mention of LGBTIQ communities that we could find, in her blogs or taped appearances, we're willing to believe her Christian affiliations don't shun or defame us. If we find that to be untrue, of course we'll report back, and remove all endorsements *s Meanwhile, if you've had more experience with Brown's presence, teaching, gear, or impact than have we, let me know your thoughts: you know I'm always open to my people, and this site is not just about, but for us.
